Factors That Impact Your Energy Bills

February brings some of the coldest weather of the year. As our home heating systems work harder and longer to keep us warm, we typically see higher energy bills.

There are a few key factors that affect electricity usage, as well as a few ways you can make a meaningful impact on home energy savings.

When you receive your monthly bill, you’re provided with a summary of how much electricity you used during the billing cycle. You can also see how electricity consumption spiked on colder days or when relatives visited.

But you might be surprised to learn that beyond monthly energy consumption, there are external factors that can impact the cost of electricity.

Keep Mylar Balloons Away From Power Lines

Celebrate safely! Keep Mylar balloons away from power lines – their metallic coating conducts electricity, causing thousands of outages each year. Never try to retrieve a balloon caught in power lines; call your local utility for assistance. #PreventOutages #SafeElectricity

Energy Efficiency Tip of the Month

Reduce heat loss from the fireplace:

Keep the fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window wide open during the winter; it allows warm air to go right up the chimney.

When using the fireplace, reduce heat loss by opening dampers in the bottom of the firebox (if provided) or open the nearest window slightly—approximately 1 inch—and close doors leading into the room. Lower the thermostat setting to between 50° and 55°F.

If the fireplace is never used, plug and seal the chimney flue.
